প্রাণিজ প্রোটিনের অন্যতম সহজলভ্য ও সাশ্রয়ী উৎস হলো ডিম। গত দুই দশকে পোলট্রি বিজ্ঞানীদের গবেষণা ও খামারিদের অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রমে দেশের বাণিজ্যিক পোলট্রি শিল্পের ব্যাপক সম্প্রসারণের হয়েছে। বর্তমানে দেশের কোটি কোটি মানুষ প্রতিদিনের খাদ্য তালিকায় ডিমকে একটি অপরিহার্য উপাদান হিসেবে গ্রহণ করছে। তবে এই শিল্পের সফলতার পেছনে রয়েছে অসংখ্য চ্যালেঞ্জ। খাদ্যের মূল্য বৃদ্ধি, রোগব্যাধি, পরিবেশগত পরিবর্তন, উৎপাদন ব্যয় বৃদ্ধি এবং ব্যবস্থাপনার ত্রুটিসহ সবকিছু মিলিয়ে একজন লেয়ার খামারিকে প্রতিদিন নতুন নতুন সমস্যার মুখোমুখি হতে হয়। এর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং অর্থনৈতিকভাবে ক্ষতিকর দুটি সমস্যা হলো ‘এগ বাইন্ড’  (Egg Binding)  এবং ‘এগ পেরিটোনাইটিস’ (Egg Peritonitis)।

Feed is the single greatest cost in broiler production, accounting for between 50-75% of total cost. Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) is calculated as the total feed used divided by the total live weight produced, with a lower value indicating greater efficiency. If FCR increases, the cost goes up; a lower FCR gives a lower cost. The key is good management from pre-placement to processing.
